15-year old Ghanaian-born golfer Daniel List won the 2015 Engen Presidential Putter Golf Tournament held at the Achimota Gof Course on Saturday.
List emerged from a field of professionals, juniors and amateurs to win the men’s event with a gross of 71, a handicap of 5 and a net score of 66.
List, who won the Under-14 European Junior Championship in 2013, told Citi Sports his victory was down to intense training and working on his game. He also mentioned that golf has been a part of him from childhood.
“I have been practising a lot and I work on my putting a lot and that helped today. Since age two, I have been playing golf and my father brought me to Achimota to play. I also got coaching lessons from Tony Amuzu. I may be young but age is just a number. It is all about how good you are on the course.”
List is a member of the Achimota Golf Club and when he is not playing, he attends school at Berkshire College in the UK.
Kwame Akuffo and Yao Degbe came second and third respectively with net scores of 68 each.
The ladies event was won by Mushi Shitisho with a net score of 66 while Mercy Bannerman came second with a net score of 70 with Joy Akutu coming third with a net score of 74.
Tournament sponsors Engen said to Citi Sports they were delighted to have partnered with the Achimota Golf Club to hold the event. They also said they would be open to working more in the area of sports in Ghana.
“It was a great success and it met our expectations. It was the first time we sponsored a golf event and we are happy with the outcome. Golf is a game of precision, integrity and discipline and as a brand, these are things we stand for. One can say that Engen and golf have the same DNA.
Sports remains one of our areas of corporate social investment. For instance, in South Africa, we sponsor a team in the Premier Soccer League. We hope to do the same thing in Ghana as well,”said Henry Akwaboah, the Managing Director of the Engen Ghana.
