LADY CAPTAIN'S MESSAGE

Distinguished golfers,

It is my privilege to say a few words on behalf of the Ladies barely two months after taking up the captainship of the Ladies Section.  The prestigious Achimota Golf Club had its first Lady Captain in 1963 and my tenure as the 48th Lady Captain of the Club started on 1 February 2016.

I joined this Club about twenty years ago as a family member and was fortunate to be coached by one of the most experienced local coaches still directly associated with the Club, David Abaloo.  I became a member of the Ladies Section for a brief period before leaving the country for many years. I however continued to maintain my membership, playing the course every time I came home on vacation while being an active member of Tanzania’s Gymkhana Golf Club, Arusha - where I served as Lady Captain for two terms - and the Kigali Golf Club in Rwanda. It was with great joy that I rejoined the robust Ladies’ family on my return home in 2009.  Achimota Golf Course has truly come of age, and now offers golfers the challenging atmosphere found in other prestigious golf courses in East Africa.

The Achimota Ladies Section comprises over thirty-five members of which about twenty are active.  The current Executive comprises:

Lady Captain Peace Akwei
Vice-Lady Captain   Lynn Mitchell
 Secretary  Beatrice Vetsch-Bempong
Treasurer     Abena Ntrakwah-Mensah
Handicap Member Ragheda Khalil
Competition Secretary Nana-Bema Tackie
Co-Opted Member Clara Price

Our monthly medal is traditionally played on the second Thursday of the month, but we plan to introduce an additional competition on a day suitable for our working ladies who cannot join in during the week and in consonance with the Club’s calendar.  With the cooperation of the current dynamic Executive Committee, the Ladies Section has been able to organize two very successful competitions in February and March 2016, and is now preparing for the April Monthly Medal.  I am proud to say that we have so far recorded good participation and enthusiasm on the part of the ladies, some of whom have lent their staunch support by way of sponsorship.  In March, our highly publicized competition was sponsored by Mobile Content Company Ltd to whom we are most grateful. We look forward to many more interesting ladies’ events in collaboration with sponsors who have already made their intentions known.

My gratitude goes to the ladies for the confidence they have reposed in me as well as the Council for their support. It is my fervent wish during my tenure to empower the Ladies Section and generate interest that would lead to the growth and expansion of our membership base.

Thank you and happy golfing.

Peace Akwei (Ms)
Lady Captain
